Clear snow and ice from all windows and lights - even the hood and roof- before driving
|

Pay attention don't try to out drive the conditions. Remember the posted speed limits are for dry pavement.

|
Leave room for maintenance vehicles and plows - stay back at least 200 feet and don't pass on the right.
|
|
Remember that, if you are driving a four wheel drive vehicle, the vehicle may help you get going quicker but it won't help you stop any quicker. Many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. Don't get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle's traction.

|
Most importantly please remember to SLOW DOWN! Also, seat belts should be worn at all times - it's the law. |
Safety Precautions
It is recommended that the following items remain in your car through the winter season: small bag of abrasive material, snow shovel, snow brush, traction mats, flashlight (fresh batteries), ice scraper, cloth/paper towels, a piece of bright cloth, jumper cables, blanket, warning devices (flares,triangles).

Keep your gas tank at least half-full. Gas lines can freeze-up if the tank is close to empty.

|
Listen to television or radio for current weather reports and emergency situations.
|
|
Dress for the season. Layers of clothing are warmer than thick clothing. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Wear headgear. Scarves should cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extremely cold air. Have warm cloths handy (in your vehicle) in case of an unforseen incident.

|
Take winter driving seriously. Travel only if absolutely necessary.
|
|
Learn to watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia. If symptoms detected, seek medical attention. |
In the event of Emergency
|
Stay in your vehicle. |
|
Run the engine at 10-minute intervals for heat. |
|
Maintain proper ventilation by making sure the exhaust pipe is not plugged.
|
|
Leave the window open slightly to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
|
|
Make yourself visible to rescuers. Tie a bright cloth to your antenna or door handle.
|
|
Turn on dome light at night, but only when running the engine. |
|
Jumper cable use: When jumping batteries connect one continuous cable to the (+) terminal of each battery. The other continuous cable should connect from the running car's negative (-) battery post to (preferably) the engine block of the stalled vehicle or the negative battery post of the stalled vehicle. |
If you are involved in an accident
|
Check to see if anyone is injured. |
|
Call 911 and request an ambulance or emergency services if necessary.
|
|
If possible, move your vehicle off the road. |
|
Exchange name, address, driver's license number, vehicle registration, and insurance information with all drivers or property owners who are involved. You must show your driver's license and registration if asked to do so.

|
If you have damaged a parked vehicle or stationary property, you must try to locate the owner to report the accident or notify the police. |
