Con Com Thanks Lucy Madden for Work on Town's Open Space & Recreation Plan

Con Com Chair Martindale presents Certificate of Appreciation to Lucy Madden

Lynnfield Conservation Commission Chairman Paul Martindale presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Lucy Madden for her Girl Scout Gold Award project at the Con Com's September 18 meeting.

Madden ’s work involved key updates to the Town’s Open Space & Recreation Plan, through survey analysis and social media outreach to identify practical ways that Lynnfield’s recreational spaces could be improved and better utilized.

As an active member of the Open Space & Recreation Plan Committee, Madden learned that Lynnfield has many open spaces for people to enjoy. However, through her community survey analysis, she noted that many residents are not aware of the opportunities for hiking and enjoying nature. She believes that more can be done to provide information about these areas. In addition to gathering community input through a town-wide survey, Madden also created a “Lynnfield Open Space and Recreation” Facebook page to promote the Town’s conservation areas on social media. She also organized clean-up days and conducted nature walks with younger scouts and fellow Lynnfield High School students.

In his presentation remarks Chair Paul Martindale noted that “Lucy’s project has been a great service to our Open Space & Recreation Committee. She has exhibited the kind of initiative, leadership, and community service that the Girl Scouts of America aspires to. The Lynnfield Conservation Commission thanks her for choosing the improvement of our conservation lands for her project.”

Madden’s work fulfills the requirements for her Lynnfield Girl Scout Gold Award - the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The Gold Award recognizes girls who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through remarkable “take action” projects that have sustainable impact in their communities.
