The Conservation Commission kicks off 2019 with its Recommended Shade Tree Planting List for residents and businesses. The list includes 14 trees selected as those best able to thrive when suitably sited on Lynnfield property locations.

In the past, property owners developing new landscaping plans or replacing a fallen or diseased tree have contacted the Commission for recommendations.

“We’re happy to provide this listing”, notes Chairman Paul Martindale. “These trees are native to our local area and solid specimens for our climate zone.” The 14 trees include White Oak, Northern Red Oak, Shagbark Hickory, Silver Maple, Sugar Maple, Red Maple, American Basswood, Black Gum, American Sycamore, Flowering Dogwood, Scarlet Oak, Yellow Poplar, Black Oak and Black Walnut.

Commissioner Janice Solomon has expanded the list to include planting information and specific characteristics of each tree, including height, spread, growth rate, Latin name, wildlife habitat, etc. The full listing is available here.

Lynnfield is noted for the beauty of its tree-lined streets and properties. Large, healthy shade trees add to property values, enhance architecture and improve the overall appearance of neighborhoods. Trees can lower cooling costs in warm weather and reduce heating costs in winter by acting as a windbreak. They improve air quality, dampen noise, reduce stormwater runoff, and harbor wildlife.
