bell off to makeover

An exciting part of the recent renovation of the Common is the upcoming restoration of the Taylor Vickers & Company bell that has enjoyed a long history of service in Lynnfield. Since 1964, it has stood on a granite slab on the Common. In 1960 it had retired from active duty in the Meeting House’s belfry, where it served as the fire alarm bell. (A belfry was added to the Meeting House in 1918 for the Meeting House’s use as “Chemical Company No. 1”.)  Research acknowledgement: Unique Reference Questions at the Lynnfield Public Library by Patricia Kelly, Head of Reference.
