LHS Students showcase Composting Civics Action Project!

Project aims to combat food waste in LHS cafeteria
Composting Group - LHS

Composting in the LHS Cafeteria to Combat Food Waste was one of 15 student-led Civics Action Projects showcased at the high school on January 18.

Launched in 2018 by the Mass Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Civics Action Projects at LHS are part of the Social Studies curriculum for all sophomores. These projects are coordinated with A Healthy Lynnfield, and facilitated by Brian Holihan, a graduate fellowship student from Merrimack College.

Civics Action projects involve students advocating for a specific change they want to see to address a problem they have identified in their community. The Composting Group identified the specific problem of food waste and researched how it was influencing their community, in this case, the high school. Through their research they decided to advocate for composting to be available in the high school cafeteria to combat food waste at LHS and have been planning the necessary steps to spearhead a positive change.
