Water for people campaign

As a Greenscapes Coalition community, Lynnfield is participating in a campaign to promote clean water, water conservation and sustainably healthy yards.

You can learn more and join this campaign at Greenscapes.org/WaterForPeople and watch the video .

Believe it or not, Stage 1 of the campaign focuses on lawn care and calls for inaction! Residents are asked to conserve water, and in particular, NOT to water their lawns. More and more, water conservation needs to be a practiced behavior, not just a response to drought. You CAN have that beautiful lawn and conserve water resources at the same time.

Did you know?

  • Frequent watering makes grass more sensitive to dry conditions, by causing it to develop shallow roots.
  • 80% of the water used on lawn irrigation evaporates into the air.
  • Massachusetts households that water their lawns in the summer use up to 1,900 gallons of water a week. That’s like running your shower for 12 hours!
  • Lawn watering in the summer occurs during the hottest, driest days of the year.
  • Many lawns use Kentucky Bluegrass, a non-native species from Europe that requires LOTS of water to stay alive.
