Mosquito Control - NEMMC (Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control)

 - -  Lynnfield Community Participation - -

Lynnfield is one of the 32 northeast Massachusetts communities that participate in the Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District program (NEMMC).

The mission of the “District” is 1) to protect citizens from mosquito-borne diseases by targeting precise, measured, and preemptive responses to specific risk as prescribed by the district’s annually-revised Integrated Pest and Vector Management Plan (IPVMP), 2) to ensure that citizens’ quality of life and regional economy are not severely impacted by abundant pestiferous mosquito outbreaks, and 3) that strategies for mosquito management are prescribed by the district’s annually-revised Best Management Practice (BMP) plans for individual communities. BMP’s are designed to incorporate the district’s environmentally sensitive and cost effective mosquito control strategies with the specific needs and concerns of each member community.

NEMMC services the entirety of each participating community. It annually approves a mosquito management plan specific to that community’s needs, uses only State-approved chemicals, and, considers each community’s ground water protection zones, wetlands, and, insect, animal and vegetative habitats when providing treatment.

Today, the NEMMC’s focus is on surveillance, proactive wetlands management, and programmatic application of larvicides through daily inspections and treatment of breeding sources. It operates under the authority of Chapter 252 and Chapter 112 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth and is governed by the State's Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board.

In addition to Lynnfield's community-wide monitoring and treatment by NEMMC, residents are free to contact NEMMC directly, or the Lynnfield Board of Health (781) 334-9481 at any time to discuss a mosquito-related concern.
