The Lynnfield Village Home & Garden Club kicked off its new year on September 12 with an entertaining and informative presentation by Joseph Gaglione of family-owned Crystal Bee Supply and Essex County Honey Company.

Gaglione provided much information about bees as critical pollinators for plant and food production. Honeybees alone pollinate 80 percent of all flowering plants, including more than 130 types of fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, bee populations have dropped alarmingly across North America. Partially in response, individuals have become interested in beekeeping as both a hobby and conservation measure. Joseph counts a dozen Lynnfield residents that maintain hives on their properties. Those simply interested in attracting more honeybees to their gardens can do so by planting Catmint, Bee Balm, Butterfly Bush, Autumn Sedum, Rose of Sharon, Scotch Broom, Phlox and Clover.

(Crystal Bee Supply offers everything needed to establish and maintain beehives, including a beginner’s class, queen bees, protective clothing, hives and tools. As Gaglione is also a beekeeper, he sells his full line of honey through his Essex County Honey Company. Both businesses are located at 18 Lake Street in West Peabody.
